The recent meeting of the MICE Club Think Tank brought together senior industry leaders and stakeholders to deliberate on the evolving challenges and opportunities impacting the Indian outbound MICE and corporate travel industry.
The discussion largely revolved around the growing uncertainty in the outbound business environment following the Hon’ble Prime Minister’s recent appeal encouraging Indians to avoid non-essential foreign travel in order to conserve foreign exchange reserves. Members observed that several corporates have currently placed their international meetings, incentive travel, conferences, and event plans on hold while assessing the overall business and geopolitical situation.
The ongoing Middle East crisis, rising global uncertainty, and fluctuating travel sentiments were also highlighted as key concerns affecting outbound movement from India. Industry experts shared that while inquiries continue, decision-making timelines have become longer, with corporates adopting a cautious approach towards overseas travel commitments.
During the session, members expressed optimism that the market could begin stabilising by or before August, provided geopolitical conditions improve and travel confidence returns globally. Many participants felt that the Indian MICE industry has demonstrated resilience in the past and would adapt once the situation normalises.
An emerging trend discussed extensively was the gradual shift of some corporates towards domestic MICE destinations. With India offering world-class convention infrastructure, luxury hospitality, and improved connectivity, destinations across the country are witnessing renewed interest for meetings and incentive programmes.
The Think Tank also deliberated on the operational challenges faced by MICE companies, particularly in managing fixed expenditures such as employee salaries, office operations, and vendor commitments during periods of slowed business activity. Members stressed that the outbound MICE segment supports a large ecosystem of professionals, suppliers, and service partners.
Industry leaders noted that more than 100,000 professionals and workers are directly and indirectly dependent on India’s outbound MICE business, making it an important contributor to the overall travel and tourism economy.
The meeting concluded with a collective commitment from members to continue engaging with industry stakeholders, promote collaborative solutions, and support business continuity during the evolving market scenario. The MICE Club Think Tank reaffirmed the importance of strategic dialogue and industry unity in navigating the current phase of transition for the Indian outbound MICE sector.
Members also mentioned the Honourable Minister of Commerce & Industry, Shri Piyush Goyal's statement at an industry event, in which he said there was no ban on business travel and urged businessmen to travel for business. It's a question for corporate business houses: do they consider MICE activity part of their business growth? How relevant is MICE for their business activity?
Industry needs to collaborate more in the times to come. The meeting ended with a lot of question marks for the industry professionals.
